As a result of continued local commercial expansion and growth, Arlington County, Virginia embarked upon a large number of urban renewal projects to improve the appearance and condition of the county for both residents and businesses. The Clarendon Centre project was one of the largest urban renewal projects in Arlington County. The project is located within the heart of Arlington's commercial district and sees a great amount of traffic from the tourism, residential and business sectors.
Working with the Eakin & Youngentob team, Bowman Consulting prepared the existing conditions survey, located all of the existing utilities and prepared the site development plans for this urban renewal project, which includes: three underground storm water management facilities; coordination with all utility companies for both new and existing utilities; studies to determine the adequacy of existing storm drainage, water and sewer mains; and design of supplemental water mains needed to provide adequate pressure for the project. The design allowed for the existing water mains to remain in service while the new supplemental water mains were installed. We also designed replacement curbs, gutters, pavement and sidewalks and addressed the preservation of an existing treed open area to create a park with a winding trail system.
Bowman Consulting's involvement with this project included extensive negotiations with both government and citizen representatives to obtain approval of all entitlements necessary to proceed with the project. A notable contribution to the project was our work with the County Public Works staff to significantly reduce the extent and cost of required offsite utility improvements to serve the project.
