My day-to-day duties include, but are not limited to, utility design and layout, grading, stormwater management design and calculations, conceptual layouts, and field visits to clarify plan information and answer questions. I deal directly with clients and their daily needs and questions, while under the direction of a Project Manager. I attend meetings with clients and county staff to further develop ideas and progress the work through the design stages. I do the majority of CAD work myself and have some delegation authority.
How long have you worked with Draper Aden Associates and how have your responsibilities increased?
I have worked with Draper Aden Associates for one year now and my responsibilities have increased greatly since I started. I have been given several small projects to carry from inception through county approval with project management help as necessary, as well as larger projects where I work directly with Senior Project Managers to carry a large portion of the design calculations with smaller client involvement.
What types of projects do you work on?
Various parking lots both from scratch and for renovations.
Small self sufficient trash and recycling centers.
40+ acre sports field complexes
Large scale demolition and re-development of commercial sites.
What types of activities, associations or memberships have you had that contribute to your career?
EIT status
ASCE membership
Member and co-captain of the Virginia Tech Concrete Canoe team, 2003-2005
Looking back to your college years, what types of internships or jobs did you have that have helped your career path?
Interning with two different construction companies as both office and field personnel helped me in many ways, the largest of which helping me make the decision of what kind of job I wanted to pursue after school. Being around construction sites also gave me invaluable lessons in how the contractor world works in association with the design world. I would recommend trying to find internships in both the design and construction side of civil engineering to see where you fit the best.
Will you be sitting for your PE exam in the coming future?
Yes. I will be sitting for my Virginia PE Exam in April 2010.
