Describe your day-to-day responsibilities.
My day-to-day activities consist of generating project proposals, meeting with clients and review agencies on projects, engineering and reviewing design plans, and overseeing the daily running of the site engineering department.
How long have you worked with Balzer & Associates, Inc. and how have your responsibilities increased?
I started with Balzer & Associates, Inc. in 1997 as a project engineer assisting senior engineers with their projects. I moved up to project manager and now am the department head for our site engineering group as well as recently being appointed to Vice President. My responsibilities have grown tremendously over the years. At first I was only responsible for small portions of a project, now I manage a staff of ten people and am responsible for all the site engineering projects of the department.
What type of projects do you work on?
I work on commercial, industrial, and high density residential projects. These consist of large and small retail shopping centers, industrial sites, apartment complexes and everything in between.
What type of activities, associations or memberships have you had that contribute to your career?
I have had the opportunity to be involved on various community committees which allowed me to gain different views on items around the area. I have also worked with various homeowner and community associations in the area during the development process for various projects. This has helped give me broad exposure to perspective clients and I have been able to form valuable relationships that are helpful in moving a project through the approval process.
Looking back to your college years, what type of internship or jobs did you have that have helped your career path?
I worked in the construction field during summer breaks. This allowed me to better understand the construction field, and problems that come up during construction. This experience gives me a better feel for designing a project and what can be done to simplify or expedite the construction schedule. Without that work experience I would have no idea the hassle that can be caused by a set of plans that do not take constructability issues into account.
Will you be sitting for your PE exam in the coming future?
I obtained my Professional Engineers license several years ago.
