Describe your day-to-day responsibilities.
At any given time I am handling many diverse projects for Kimley, Horn & Associates, Inc. such as large and small retail development, including single standalone as well as multiple tenant retail development, office building and office park development, utility design and relocation, stormwater and watershed modeling, and roadway and infrastructure design. With any project, there is much necessary communication and contact between clients and municipalities. Along with my land development responsibilities I am also actively involved in the career development of the Landscape Architects, E.I.T’s and interns that work with me on my team, as well as assisting with office management.
How long have you worked with Kimley, Horn & Associates, Inc. and how have your responsibilities increased?
I started with Kimley, Horn & Associates, Inc. in May of 1999 and have seen my responsibilities here evolve significantly over the past eight years.
What type of projects do you work on?
I work quite a bit with Wal-Mart and was recently project manager for the expansion of a Division 1 Wal*Mart into a Supercenter in the City of Norfolk, Virginia. The project consisted of relocating several existing utilities along the side of the property to expand the building including a 20-inch water main, 8-inch sanitary sewer force main, sanitary sewer pumping station, and a high-voltage overhead power line owned by Dominion Virginia Power.
I have served as the project manager for the City of Newport News on a major roadway and infrastructure improvements project. That project included over 3,000 feet of new roadway, which included public sewer, water, and drainage. Most of the private development projects I’ve worked on have been for large commercial developments and office parks that involved the extension of utilities for the project. Some of those utility extensions involved public utilities that had to conform to municipal standards.
What type of activities, associations or memberships have you had that contribute to your career?
HRACRE, ASCE.
Looking back to your college years, what type of internships or jobs did you have that have helped your career path?
I interned my junior and senior years with a multi-discipline Civil Engineering Firm in upstate New York in their Land Development Department. I knew from the first internship that I wanted my career to be in Land Development. I know to this day, that without those internships, I probably would not be where I am today.
Will you be sitting for your PE exam in the coming future?
I am already a licensed PE in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
