Describe your day-to-day responsibilities:
My day-to-day responsibilities are as a design analyst providing my project managers with technical assistance and design for projects. These duties include, but are not limited to, stormwater management and design, utility layout and design, site and lot grading, roadway design, BMP/water quality design and calculations, pump station design, preparing design narratives, and coordinating plan submittals to the local municipalities. I do a lot of the CAD work myself but the majority of the CAD work in our office is delegated to our full-time CAD technicians.
How long have you worked with Kimley, Horn & Associates, Inc. and how have your responsibilities increased?
I have worked with Kimley, Horn & Associates, Inc. for one year and have seen a rapid increase in my responsibilities throughout this first year. I have been given more responsibility and independence in dealing with the design of projects as I am expected to carry out much of the design with little assistance from my project managers. I have seen my role increase in the completion of a project as I now am responsible for coordinating and organizing plan submittals along with preparing the reports that accompany them. My communication responsibilities have increased as I am now asked to talk with clients, architects, surveyors, and contractors for technical assistance. Overall, there is more "ownership" taken with a project now compared to when first starting work.
What type of projects do you work on?
Mainly large scale single and multi-family residential (Currently working on two 500+ acre subdivisions)
Small to large scale Retail Projects (Ranging from small Office Building sites to Target, Wal-Mart, and Home Depot sites)
What type of activities, associations or memberships have you had that contribute to your career?
EIT designation
ASCE membership
Looking back to your college years, what type of internships or jobs did you have that have helped your career path?
I was fortunate to have a summer internship every summer throughout college working for a small consulting and municipal engineering firm back home in NJ. This experience was so valuable as I was able to learn about "real world" engineering application compared to just learning from class. I mainly credit these internships for preparing me for full time employment after college. I would recommend to anyone to have as many internships as possible throughout college.
Will you be sitting for your PE exam in the coming future?
Yes, I plan to sit for my PE exam in April 2010.
